Conflict occurs almost daily in both our professional and personal lives. Unfortunately too few of us have developed the skills needed to work to resolve the conflicts in which we find ourselves. Thus, we tend to avoid them, pushing them under the rug. We all know what happens when something is pushed under the rug: it grows. The focus of Agnes Doody’s presentation will be on ways in which to develop techniques and strategies to assist us in dealing with conflict when it occurs. Her presentation will be interactive and will include one exercise in conflict resolution.
Join us for an exceptional enrichment and networking opportunity at this breakfast event. Our speaker Agnes Doody, Ph.D., is an accomplished educator with decades of experience.
Agnes Doody commands strong interpersonal communication competences. She has taught on both the graduate and undergraduate level for more than four decades in the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island, where she is now Professor Emerita. She has specialized in negotiation and mediation, public speaking, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication and gender communication.
In addition, Agnes Doody is president of Arthur Associates, a consulting firm which focuses on business communication and management. As a consultant she has coached executives, mediated conflicts among and between senior management, has developed in-house training programs focusing on reducing workplace conflict resolution, has offered programs in public speaking, intercultural communication, business writing, and gender communication. She has also completed communication audits for senior management in several organizations.
Keenly interested in international affairs, Agnes studied the emerging democratic aspects of the Shah's White Revolution and Prime Minister J. Nehru's leadership in India. That study took her to both India and Iran. Her understanding of intercultural communication in the global community has been strengthened by her visits to more than 45 countries and six continents.
Agnes' strong leadership skills are clearly demonstrated in the positions she has held:
President Rhode Island Mediation Services

2010 Conference Planning Meeting
When: Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 2 pm
Where: RI
Who: Institutional reps and volunteers interested in planning the 2010 spring conference.
Please contact Jennifer Chasse (401.232.6501) for details or if you were unable to attend but have workshop suggestions.
Meeting Minutes:
The Rhode Island Women in Higher Education met at the Alumni Center at Rhode Island College on June 2, 2009. Attending the meeting were:
- Bryant University: Jennifer Chasse, Linda Norton, Annette Cerilli
- Community College of Rhode Island: Susan Sienkiewicz
- Johnson & Wales: Anice O’Connor
- Rhode Island College: Nancy Hoogasian, Debra Thomson, Ellie O’Neill, Shana Murrell
- Rhode Island School of Design: Virginia Dunleavy
- University of Rhode Island: Jayne Richmond, Andrea Hopkins
I. Jennifer Chasse called the meeting to order, and began a discussion of the Women in Higher Education Conference held at Salve Regina University on April 17. It was agreed the event was successful with 112 registrations and a wait list. All the member institutions were represented. Copies of the consolidated evaluations were distributed and discussed. It was agreed that if presentations by the institutional reps continues, there should be a theme (top 2 “Wow!” items?) and they should be brief. Net profit from the event was $532.13.
II. RIC President Nancy Carriuolo recommended the appointment of Jayne Richmond of URI to be Co-President of RIWHE. The ACE office has approved this plan, which prepares for succession planning by the group. A motion was made to name Jayne Richmond as Co-President; seconded and voted unanimously.
III. A discussion of a RIWHE Scholarship Fund was postponed.
IV. The 2010 Conference opportunities were presented. The objectives of the conference are networking; leadership and professional development; and opportunities to put newer professionals in touch with senior women in higher education.
Ochre Court, where the Conference has been held, is available on April 16 and April 30. There would be a $500 fee for set up and clean up. An advantage of this venue is that it is big and not limited. A disadvantage is there are no breakout rooms.
Jayne Richmond contacted the management from Alton Jones, a URI facility. The management has offered to waive the per person price and host a noon to five event. The large room holds 100 people; there are lots of breakout areas and lunch is legendary. Jayne recommended if we choose this venue that we offer a donation to acknowledge the generous in-kind donation the facility is making.
Discussion ensued about the program for the day and it was agreed our catch phrase would be Feel better, do better. The day could be balanced between traditional and non-traditional breakouts. We’ll explore having facilitators offer “teaser” presentations on decreasing stress, increasing fun by presenting a demonstration of their product or service. It was stressed that this would be an introduction of the (product/service), and if interested, we can explore it on our own later. Suggestions for facilitated presentations included yoga; astrology; wine tasting & nutrition; life balance; women’s health; breath institute. Lunch is an opportunity for a speaker to tie together the opportunities to Feel better, do better. We believe that providers would welcome the opportunity to attend, with the prospect of meeting new clients.
The group voted unanimously to plan this event as our annual spring conference.
Jayne Richmond will confirm that April 30, 2010 is available at Alton Jones for the event. She will also confirm the number of seats available for lunch. The group discussed having a 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. time frame for the event.
V. There will be a fall event sponsored by RIWHE on October 8, 2009 at the URI University Club. Dr. Agnes Doody will provide a seminar on “Gender and Communication.” Breakfast will be served from 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. and the program will be from 9:00 – 11:00.
VI. Information and updates available on the organization’s website were discussed. Jennifer Chasse issued a plea for updated information from the members. It was suggested that we look into having an intern, paid or unpaid, to upgrade and maintain the website.
VII. Our next meeting will be on October 8, following the seminar at URI. The main agenda item will be fleshing out the Spring Conference.
